Equipment needed on Club Trips

For all of the Club Trips (Weekend Trips and Minibus Day Trips) you will require waterproofs, a good pair of walking boots and warm clothing. Jeans are not suitable for these Trips. Contact the Trip Organiser for more information. (For Local Walks, see About Local Walks page)

Weather conditions in the British Isles are never predictable. To ensure you’re properly prepared, read the ‘Equipment List‘ and the ‘Participation Statement‘ carefully. In addition, the Participation Statement contains a declaration that all club trip participants must sign and then give to the Trip Organiser before the trips. There are some essential items of equipment that you’ll need to take on a trip, such as waterproofed walking boots, a waterproof jacket and warm clothing. You will not be allowed to participate on a trip if you’re not properly equipped. Email the Trip Organiser if you need to borrow any kit from the club for their trip, and they’ll also be able to answer any other questions you may have about what to take with you.

Do not turn up for a trip without the required equipment.

The Participation Statement, which each member must sign before participating in each trip, reads “Oxford University Walking Club recognises that walking, and hillwalking in particular, is an activity, which carries with it a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions and involvement”. Please contact trip.safety@ouwc.org if you have any questions or comments.

Not all walking boots are like these traditional leather ones, but proper boots will have the following features, essential for much of the terrain visited on club trips: good ankle support, waterproofing, and good grip. Trainers lack all of these!

Borrowing Equipment

The Club owns a lot of equipment, such as waterproofs, sleeping bags, and tents. There is a summary inventory of club equipment below. The equipment and maps are available for Club members to borrow free of charge for personal use, unless it is being used on a Club activity, which takes priority.

To borrow equipment for a Club Trip, get in touch with the Trip Organiser. For anything else, please contact quartermaster@ouwc.org, but first read the text below on the Loan Agreement that you will have to sign.

You are also welcome to make suggestions on equipment that the Club might want to purchase. Please contact the Quartermaster about this, and it will be discussed by the committee.

Loan Agreement

As a Club member, you are entitled to borrow the Club’s equipment free of charge. To do this (except for Club Trips) you must first fill in a Club Loan Agreement For Members (PDF) (DOC), and leave a deposit cheque made out to the value of the equipment. The cheque will be returned to you when the equipment is returned in reasonable time and satisfactory condition. If the equipment is lost or damaged, you will have to reimburse the Club accordingly.
