South Downs

Date: 27th February

The South Downs are a range of rolling chalk hills stretching across Sussex and Hampshire in South-East England. In 2010 they became the UK’s newest National Park. From the ridgeline stunning views range from the English Channel to the South, across the Weald to the hills of the Greensand Ridge and North Downs in Surrey. In this 20km circular walk we will be taking in Ditchling Beacon, the highest point in East Sussex and 3rd highest in the South Downs, and Devil’s Dyke, a steep-sided chalk valley said to have been built by the Devil in an attempt to drive the sea through the hills to flood the land behind!

New Forest

Date: 20th February

Despite its misleading name the New Forest is not new, but quite the opposite – it was created as a deer hunting area by William the Conqueror in 1079! There is a wealth of places to visit and explore in the New Forest, each season provides a change of scene from the rich deep colours of spring and summer to the seasons of mists and mellow fruitfulness. The landscape is a mosaic of ancient and ornamental woodland, open heather-covered heaths, rivers and valley mires, a coastline of mudflats and saltmarshes, and pretty, historic villages. What is more, the New Forest is believed to have the highest concentration of ancient trees in Western Europe!
