Avebury Stone Circle

Saturday 14 July

This walk along the ancient Ridgeway of the Marlborough Downs will take in several ancient heritage sites: the earthworks of an Iron Age hill fort known as Barbury Castle, the Winterbourne Basset White Horse hill figure, and the Avebury Stone Circle, immense standing stones with 400m in diameter. Older than the more famous Stonehenge, the Avebury temple was assembled about 2800 BC and used for about 2300 years, which suggests that it was perhaps the most significant sacred site in all of Britain throughout the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age.
