Scotland Long Weekend

Thursday 22nd - Monday 26th September

The Cairngorm Mountains

Join Dom and Andrew as we head for the far North and a last cheeky bit of mountain fun before the summer draws to an inevitable close. The Scottish Highlands provide some of Britain's best and most varied mountain walking. Unfortunately, they're rather far away... Therefore this is your once in a year chance to join the Walking Club in heading for those distant parts.

So that those of us addicted to the 9-5 style of existence don't have to take more than 2 days of work, the plan is to leave shortly after work finishes on thursday evening. We're not quite hardcore enough to attempt to travel the entire way during that evening, so we'll be stopping off at Bents camping barn, just to the west of the Lake District. The plan is then to complete the journey on Friday, but breaking up the monotony with a shortish walk either around the camping barn itself, or in Scotland.

In tramping over the high peaks and deep glens of the Cairngorms, we'll be walking through mountain terrain more remote, rugged and wild than anything in England & Wales. The whole of Saturday, Sunday and the first half of Monday will be devoted to exploring this beautiful and popular area. Of course, it wouldn't be a walking club trip if all we talked about was the walking... In the evenings, we'll be putting our feet up at Slochd Mhor Lodge. From a quick trawl of the website, I note that it includes such luxuries as a woodburning stove and a rather large lounge... No doubt, though, we'll end up leaving this cozy place for the sanctuary of the pub and large volumes of Scotland's other famous delight - whiskey! We then wearily descend to Oxford on Monday - expect us to arrive back very late though, hopefully around midnight.

Please check out the Sign Up Information for this trip and enclose a Participation Statement with your payment. You will need all the usual equipment for mountain trips, including a good pair of well worn in walking boots, and good all over waterproofs. You will also need a sleeping bag for this trip and money for two pub meals and a takeaway (plus of course some money for drinks whilst we are there!). Please feel free to email the Principal Trip Leader with any questions. Aaah, Scotland here we come...
