Oxford to Aylesbury (or to Cambridge?!)

This walk between Oxford to Aylesbury, along paths and minor roads, is the first section of a mammoth 81-mile walk from Oxford to Cambridge called the "Varsity March", which a group of people from the Cambridge University Rambling Club do every year.

We will be joining them as far as Aylesbury as an OUWC local walk. Buses from Aylesbury to Oxford run regularly throughout the day, and also make many intermediate stops within about two miles of the route, so there are many options for different distances – see below. For those who make it as far as Aylesbury (23 miles), there will be the option to join the Cambridge ramblers for a pub supper before catching the bus to Oxford.

Also, although the Varsity March as a whole is not an OUWC event, a number of OUWC members have (as individuals) joined the Cambridge ramblers beyond Aylesbury in the past, including two who have made it all the way to Cambridge. Again, you would be very welcome to do so, but this should not be undertaken lightly. Be warned that after Aylesbury is an overnight section of at least another 20 miles until the next convenient end point. Therefore, anyone considering walking beyond Aylesbury must contact Steven Smith (sgs30[at]cam.ac.uk) in advance (see also details on their website).

Provided that you are intending to walk no further than Aylesbury, you are welcome just to turn up on the day, but please check the website later for confirmation of the start time.

Shorter options: for details of shorter options with estimated timings, please see the Cambridge ramblers' helpful itinerary, of which the last column ("Escape") lists a number of options – see the footnotes for details. Note that you would have to walk unaccompanied from the listed point to the bus stop, although each escape option between Oxford and Aylesbury involves only a single road or track leading to the village with the bus stop.
