Home : Welcome
Hello, and welcome back to a new term with the walking club! I hope you're all rested and ready to get back out into the hills to make the most of the summer months! We won’t be sending out printed term cards this term – so be sure to check your emails and this website for details of trips, socials, and other events on offer!
We have 5 weekend trips planned for this term, including some exciting variations of usual club trips! We begin with a wild camping trip to the Lake District (end of 2nd week). At the end of 3rd week, join Barbara and Jaya John in exploring the Brecon Beacons, which will include some navigation training and mountain walking. If you want coastal views, beaches, and walks along the South West Coastal Path, we will be heading to Cornwall at the end of 4th week. 6th week sees Bernhard, Rob, and Rachel heading for Snowdonia. Finally, (at the end of 9th week), we round off the term with a 9-day trip to the Highlands of Scotland (Isle of Skye and Glen Coe area). This will give us 7 days of exhilarating walking in these two stunning areas.
For those of you who can't manage a full weekend away, we have one minibus day trip planned to the New Forest (the area between Bolderwood and Lyndhurst) at the end of 7th week. The trip will consist of leisurely walking on low-lying ground, along well maintained paths through largely wooded areas.
As ever, the more informal local walks will take place every weekend, for those who want something a bit closer to Oxford. These walks are more flexible – just turn up on the day! They also offer an easy introduction to navigation and leading – contact Justin, the archivist (archivist@ouwc.org) for more details on being a local walk leader.
The main social event of the term is our PUNT PARTY, which will be held on Sunday 30th May (beginning of 6th week). This is an opportunity to enjoy one of the most famous Oxford past-times at a fraction of the usual cost. Only £5 for 3 hours, snacks and copious quantities of Pimms! We will also have the chance to dine at Magdalen’s Formal Hall on Wednesday 12th May (3rd week) – just £7 for a scrumptious three-course dinner. Email Joe (social@ouwc.org) to reserve a place. Look out also for a Sports Evening on Wednesday of 4th week, and an evening walk to the Isis Tavern (Wednesday of 6th week)!
All of this is only possible if volunteers help out. There are plenty of ways to help out in the club: weekend and minibus day trips require trip organisers, trip leaders, and minibus drivers. Without them, trips could not go ahead. Contact Jaya John (trip.safety@ouwc.org) if you want to organise or lead, and Helen (secretary@ouwc.org) if you're available for driving. And finally, do consider getting involved on committee! Feel free to contact me (president@ouwc.org) for further details.
I hope to see you all in the hills soon!
