Welcome to Michaelmas Term with OUWC!
We are looking forward to an exciting term with weekend trips, day trips, and local walks! Michaelmas Term is going to be busy with weekend trips to Exmoor with the highest sea cliffs of mainland Britain, to Snowdonia in the north of Wales, and with a camping trip in the Lake District. On our Minibus day trips we will be heading to Purbeck and the Malvern Hills. Sign up online in week 1 or at our ‘Free Tea’ event.
This year we are having a Freshers’ Trip to the beautiful area of Long Mynd to offer new arrivals the possibility of experiencing the walking club's main activity and atmosphere. Sign ups are opening on the first day of Fresher’s Fair.
If you want to join a walk on short notice there are our ever popular local walks. This term is coming up with walks in both the Cotswolds and the Chilterns, along rivers, to the source of the Thames, to Stone Age monuments, and much more. Just be at the right time at the meeting point and you are in.
Our main social event in Michaelmas Term is our annual Ceilidh (Scottish Dance) at Lady Margaret Hall at the end of week 7. Details to follow closer to the time!
This term, I am keen to encourage everyone to get involved more with the club, whether that is organising a trip for Hilary term or leading a local walk. The club is run on the basis of people volunteering their time to organise these trips – it’s not too much work and we can team you up with more experienced members to help. More importantly, organising a trip is the best way to go walking in the places that interest you! We need drivers too - if you are over 21 and able to drive, consider taking the minibus test. This gives you a guaranteed spot on trips. Please also consider joining the Committee at the TGM towards the end of term!
If you don’t feel up to organising a trip but still want to get more involved with hillwalking in general, then you may be interested in mountain skills training and first aid courses we are going to advertise in Michaelmas Term and hold in Hilary Term. Watch this space for details!
Finally, don’t forget that the club offers the opportunity for keen walkers to find like-minded people to join them, whether that is for a walk locally during the vacation or for something more adventurous like trekking in Europe or scrambling in North Wales. If you have any questions about the club or want to get more involved in some way, then please contact me at ().
