Winchester through the Ages

15 Nov

This ancient city at the Western end of the South Downs grew from the Roman settlement of Venta Belgarum (‘meeting-place of the Belgae tribe’), and was subsequently reconstructed by Alfred the Great. Home to Britain’s oldest public school (Winchester College) and the longest cathedral in Europe (Winchester Cathedral), it’s also a great view to take in from the surrounding hills.
