A very warm welcome back after the summer vacation, and especially for all those people who are new to Oxford!
Undoubtedly, Oxford is a wonderful place to study but after a while it can seem oppressively full of road works, demanding tutors and horrible days spent in underground labs or libraries. This is why the Walking Club gives you a great opportunity to escape from the city into the fresh air of the countryside for a day or a weekend.
For those of us who like serious mountains there are weekend trips to the Lake District and Snowdonia. If you prefer gentle rolling countryside and moorland then come to the Yorkshire Dales or the Berwyns, an area of Wales the club hasn't visited for a long time. And for those feeling Sea-Withdrawal-Symptoms, then come and explore Dorset's impressive coastline or end the term in style with a trip to Exmoor. We simply have it all!
There is also a Local Walk every Saturday and Sunday during term-time, great if you can't commit to an entire weekend away. Just turn up on the day and explore Oxfordshire, and regions such as the Ridgeway, the Cotswolds and the Chilterns. The club even subsidises the transport costs, making walking with us a little easier on the pocket!
Or if you want a day out a bit further a field, sign up for a Minibus Day-trip and explore the Long Mynd, the Roaches, Stonehenge or the Mendips for just £7! A lot cheaper than going by public transport.
And if you fancy a relaxing day without your walking boots why not join Ben Kinley and Deb Slade on a fun trip to Legoland, near Windsor!
To sign up for Weekend and Minibus Day-trips come along to Free Tea, on Wednesday of 1st week in the Old Refectory at Wadham College. Here you can join the club, chat to trip leaders about the trips and sign up for trips and some of the social events.
Speaking of socials, we also have a fun-packed calendar of Social Events with at least one social every week, including a trip to the Greyhounds, a climbing evening, a pub quiz, Christmas party and many more. The highlight this term, an event not to be missed, is the Ceilidh on the 22nd November, trade your walking boots for dancing shoes as the "Mouse and Trousers" return once more to entertain us.
Don't forget to check out our newly redesigned website for up-to-date information on trip places, Social Events and exciting News. The Photos section in particular is worth a look, with hundreds of photos taken on Club Trips and at Social Events.
We are also running a trip aimed at the club's pool of Trip Leaders for the first time this term, the X-trip. This will allow the Trip Leaders to enhance their leading skills amidst the mountains of Snowdonia and will hopefully be a highly popular and successful weekend.
Finally I'd like to say a massive thank you to the Committee and Trip Leaders for all their hard work. Here's to a great term!
Heather Walker,
President
