MT02 Welcome

An Awesome Autumn With OU Walking Club

Get ready, here comes another packed year for the Walking Club! Welcome back to all existing members, as well as a special "Hello and Welcome" to all freshers, and others who are joining the club for the first time this term.

After the long summer many will feel slightly claustrophobic being confined to Oxford's city limits for 9 weeks, so what better way to break it up than going away with the Walking Club for a weekend? There are six exciting weekend trips to choose between, ranging from relaxed rambling in the picturesque coastal area of north Cornwall, to more challenging peak-grabbing in the mountains of the Lake District or Snowdonia. Weekend trips cost just £30 or £38 (depending on the accommodation), covering everything except meals on the journeys there and back, which represents great value-for-money.

To sign up for weekend or minibus trips, please make every effort to come to our "Free Tea" on Wednesday 16th October (1st week) at 5pm.

As always, there are also two local walks each weekend of term-time, as well as the resurrection of Barney's night hike. Explore Oxfordshire, the Chilterns, the Cotswolds or even further afield, and you needn't sign up in advance. We know the financial burden of being students in Oxford all too well, so we operate a subsidy scheme to cut the public transport costs for members on these walks.

On top of all that there's our fantastic social schedule, which keeps getting better each term. Michaelmas 2002 will be no different, with a packed calendar of varied weekly events and activities. In particular keep your diaries free for the Halloween Party (back by popular demand), and the old Oxford tradition, the Walking Club Annual Ceilidh!

Finally, fancy being a trip-leader yourself? - Let me draw your attention to out new frequent leader-training opportunities. There should be "Leader-approved" training, "Walking Group Leader" (WGL) training and "Mountain Leader" (ML) training courses during the year: Keep your eyes peeled for the latest details on the club website and on club e-mails.

I look forward to seeing you all soon! Have a great term.

John Seymour,

President
