Southern Snowdonia

Date: 4th – 6th March (Week 7)

Cadair Idris is very rugged but green and has stunning views – especially on the lake it surrounds. There are several routes up the mountain, which can be conquered by anybody. Cadair Idris is one of the lesser visited and lesser known mountains of Snowdonia, but well worth it.

It is also one of the more mysterious mountains. In times long past, a giant called Idris Gaur ruled Cadair Idris – the seat of Idris. And on the highest crown of this mountain is a bed-shaped form, great in length and width, built of slabs fixed around it, called the Bed or the grave of Idris. And it is said that whoever lies and sleeps on that bed, one of two things will happen to him – either he will be a poet of the best kind, or go entirely demented.

Close by are other interesting mountain ranges we may visit. Last year we also visited the local mountainous forests in Coed y Brenin forest park, with lovely waterfalls.

We are going to stay in an award winning three-star hostel in Corris. It is a school over a 100 years old. The hut is big but is really cosy, with a huge log fire and a very nice atmosphere. There are several big rooms for sharing, and one 8 person room will be allocated to girls only. We have hired the entire hut, and it is absolutely massive; it can sleep up to 45 people. Last year’s trip was a big success with 38 people.

Lake District Wild Camping

Date: 12th – 14th February (Week 4)

This is a wild camping trip to the Longsleddale area of the Lake District. We will be driving down on the Friday afternoon before walking to our first campsite that evening. Each day we will be walking with full packs, i.e. tent, food, stove etc. in our rucksacks, and pitching camp at a different place. The peaks surrounding Longsleddale include High Street and Harter Fell and are a truly spectacular setting to get away from it all for the weekend.

PLEASE NOTE: This trip is NOT a led trip like all of the other trips this term, i.e. there will be no leaders, and everyone is treated as an equal on the trip. Due to the nature of the trip, it is definitely a lot tougher than most other OUWC trips, even those to similar locations. So that the trip can proceed smoothly you MUST be able to undertake the walk that has been planned. If you don’t have experience of wild camping with a full pack then please email James so that we can discuss what would be involved (or come to Free Tea and chat in person).
